A dynamic and enlightening workshop titled ‘Gandhian Concept in Practice’ was held on July 29th, 2023, at the Green Grass Hotel in Jaffna. The event, organized by Mahathma Gandhi Ashramam in the memory of Late Mrs Saraswathy Thambipillai, brought together a group of enthusiastic Philosophy students to explore the practical applications of Gandism. The workshop aimed to delve into the challenges and possibilities of implementing Gandian principles in contemporary society.

The workshop commenced with an introduction to the life and philosophy of Mahatma Gandhi, a visionary leader and advocate of nonviolent resistance. Participants were exposed to the fundamental principles of Gandism, including nonviolence (ahimsa), truth (satya), self-discipline (tapas), and selfless service (seva). These principles provided the foundation for the subsequent discussions and activities.

The workshop candidly addressed the challenges that arise when attempting to apply Gandian principles in the modern world. Participants engaged in thoughtful discussions about the complexities of implementing nonviolence in the face of conflict and oppression. The ethical dilemmas surrounding the pursuit of truth and the practical difficulties of self-discipline were also explored. It was acknowledged that embracing Gandism requires overcoming societal, cultural, and personal barriers.

Amidst the contemplation of challenges, the workshop also focused on the inspiring possibilities and potential solutions inherent in Gandism. Participants brainstormed innovative ways to integrate Gandian principles into various spheres of life, including politics, social activism, and community development. The power of collective action, the importance of education, and the role of empathy in fostering positive change were highlighted as key avenues for practicing Gandism effectively.

The workshop featured interactive activities designed to enhance participants’ understanding of Gandian principles and their practical applications. Role-playing exercises and group discussions allowed participants to simulate real-life scenarios and explore how Gandism could be employed to navigate complex situations with compassion and integrity.

The ‘Gandism in Practice’ workshop organized by Mahatma Gandhi Asramam was an engaging and thought-provoking event that left a profound impact on the participating Philosophy students. By delving into both the challenges and possibilities of implementing Gandian principles in contemporary society, the workshop encouraged critical thinking, ethical reflection, and a deeper appreciation for the relevance of Gandism in the present day.
