Field Visit to Jaffna Prison

The field visit to Jaffna Prison took place on September 23, 2023, as part of the curriculum for the Unit of Human Rights: Issues and Debates (PHCH 32013/ PHC 23013). The purpose of the visit was to provide students with a real-world understanding of the challenges and issues related to human rights. The field visit to Jaffna Prison was chosen due to its significance in the context of human rights and social justice. The location provided a unique opportunity for students to witness firsthand the practical challenges and debates surrounding human rights in our society. Mr. T. Kanagaraj, a visiting lecturer from the Department of Philosophy, took on the responsibility of leading the visit.

The visit included guided tours, interactive sessions with prison staff, and discussions on the various human rights issues faced by the incarcerated population. The students actively engaged in conversations with prison officials, gaining insights into the complexities of balancing security concerns with the rights and dignity of prisoners. The experience allowed them to witness the practical application of human rights principles in a challenging environment and stimulated thoughtful discussions on the ethical considerations surrounding incarceration.

Throughout the visit, Mr. Kanagaraj facilitated meaningful reflections and debrief sessions, encouraging students to connect theoretical concepts learned in the classroom with the realities observed at Jaffna Prison.
