Visit of Masters of Social Work Students of Madras Christian College, India to Department of Philosophy, University of Jaffna
Masters of Social Work students from Madras Christian College, India visited to the Department of Philosophy at the University of Jaffna on 18.01.2024. Mr.T.Thirumayuran, Executive Director of Center for Children Happiness initiated this visit. It was organized to facilitate an interactive session aimed at exchanging study matters, discussing post-graduate opportunities, sharing cultural values between the two educational institutions and gaining knowledge on the Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) services provided by the Department of Philosophy. The visit aimed to foster academic collaboration, cultural exchange, and mutual learning among students and faculty members from both institutions.
Prof. Dr. K. Mariam Samuel, Head of the Department of Social Work and Assistant Prof.Dr.P. Salomon visited with twenty MSW students.
Activities During the Visit:
- Welcome and Introductions: The visit commenced with a warm welcome extended by the Head of the Department of Philosophy, University of Jaffna. Introductions were made, allowing students and faculty members from both institutions to familiarize themselves with each other.
- Interactive Session: An interactive session was organized to facilitate discussions on various topics of mutual interest. Students and faculty members engaged in dialogue on academic curriculum, research interests, and career prospects in social work and psychology. The exchange of ideas provided valuable insights into the academic and professional landscape in both disciplines.
- Exchange of Study Matters: Students from Madras Christian College shared their experiences and perspectives on social work education in India, while students from the University of Jaffna discussed the nuances of psychology and philosophy studies in Sri Lanka. The exchange of study matters allowed participants to gain a broader understanding of academic practices and challenges in different cultural contexts.
- Exploration of Post-graduate Opportunities: Discussions were held on post-graduate opportunities available to students in social work and psychology, both locally and internationally. Faculty members provided guidance on pursuing higher education, scholarship opportunities, and potential career paths in their respective fields.
- Cultural Exchange: The visit provided an opportunity for students to exchange cultural values, traditions, and practices. Participants shared insights into their cultural heritage through presentations, performances, and informal conversations, fostering mutual respect and appreciation for diversity.
- Visit to MHPSS Lab: As part of the visit, the MSW students and their professors were given a guided tour of the Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) lab – AHAM at the University of Jaffna. They gained insights into the counseling services provided by the department, including psychotherapy, counseling sessions, and community outreach programs aimed at promoting mental well-being.
